What’s Up in 6th Grade?
Reading in 6th grade focuses on reading fluency, independent reading of a variety of genres, comprehension, and connection with our texts. Additionally, we will focus a lot on author's intention, the difference between fact and opinion, inferencing, and analysis! We will read a variety of texts together and independently. I work to find texts that our students will connect with, but we no one enjoys every book. Please support your child in reading at home on a nightly basis for at least twenty minutes. A helpful practice is to find a time to read with your child - you could even read the same book!!! Modeling is always helpful when trying to support any learning!
We are constantly writing in sixth grade!! I have found writing to be a less desirable area for some of our students, so I have worked hard to find times for our class to learn what they like writing about. Not only will we independently write, but we will connect our bigger writing pieces to our Humanities and Science curriculum! A majority of our year together will be spent around paragraph and essay organization. How do we draw in readers? What are the different genres of writing? How do I know which genre will be most effective with my audience? What is analysis? These are questions we will interrogate together throughout the year! I recommend having your child journal at home. Journaling helps promote writing, and is also something you can all do together!
Humanities and Science:
We have many big ideas to grapple with this year! The 6th grade will be diving into World Geography and all that it has to offer. The first part of the year will be spent familiarizing ourselves with what geography is and how we locate places, people, and cultures. The ultimate goal is for our group to participate in our very own Model UN. This will involve student pairs working together to really get to know their country of choice. This will differ in country studies from years past, and will involve strong organizational and research skills. Most importantly, we will spend a lot of time talking about our own identities in relation to others, as well as the role perspective plays in all of this
Earth Science will be our focus for the year. We will look closely at our own impact on the Earth, the history of our Earth, and the systems that keep our planet alive. As a class, we will complete fun projects, write labs, and learn the practices of real life scientists.
Sixth grade is a big math year! We begin to delve into the big ideas of Ratio and Proportion, Writing Equations, Geometry, and much more. Math can be overwhelming for students at times, and it can also feel very underwhelming. We have students with many different backgrounds, and do our best to differentiate for all children. Please stay in communication with me or Ms. Toher if you have any questions!
What I Need is a 45 minute block of time for targeted, small group instruction. Students from the 6th will work in small groups to support and enhance student learning in math and reading. These groups will be planned and lead in collaboration with the academic interventionists from the Learning Lab: Krista Larrow, and Jenna Aube.
Student Leadership and Service
The students are in the beginning stages of deciding how they will play a leadership role within our community. They are choosing an area of interest and working to figure out how they can bring that to Twinfield. Examples include: ECO helpers, Journalists, Reading Buddies, Pre-School helpers, etc. I believe this will be a great experience that will help foster confidence and deeper connections to our community. There may be times where your students leadership opportunities will take them out of the class. This will not be for extended periods, and I will be strictly monitoring. The student will be in charge of keeping up on what they missed, and I will support with classroom materials
As always, reach out at anytime. Email is the best way to reach me, and please call or email again if you need an urgent response. I feel so privileged to work with your child and I can promise you that I will spend this year being their biggest advocate (next to you, of course!)
