It's hard to believe a week has already gone by since our exciting trip to the Northwoods Stewardship Center. As a teacher, it was amazing to watch student work together, support one another, challenge themselves, and conquer many challenges. What a memorable experience. We hope your student had a great time too! We kept very busy playing games, learning survival skills, hiking, canoeing, visiting an owl, and taking care of ourselves. We learned a lot about ourselves and one another.
What a fabulous second week of school! This week we began digging in to some of the big ideas for the year.
In math this week, we worked a lot around place value, and decimals. The students worked with their learning scales to help assess what they needed in class. We are definitely dusting off the cobwebs of summer. It is always a great idea to practice math at home! Front Row, Khan Academy, Adapted Math, and many other websites offer fun ways to practice. This week students improved a lot in their abilities to read and write fractions as decimals, and decimal as fractions. Additionally, they worked on comparing decimals using inequalities. Inequalities compare numbers using symbols, such as greater than/less than, etc.
We did a lot in literacy, as well! We continued with our Read Aloud, Lost in the Sun, and began our first class book: The Revealers! Ask your child about what we are reading in class! We are working on the ways that we engage with and respond to our reading. I have been pushing students to think deeper - to go below the surface of the words! Some parents took a copy of our class book home with them to read along! This could be a great idea, and I have many extras! Just ask! We are also beginning to work on writing organization. What are the best ways to reach our audience? How are writers effective?
Last, but not least, the students have been planning out the leadership positions they would like to hold this year. Right now we are in the planning stages, and throughout the next couple of weeks, students will prepare action plans. How do they see their job supporting our community? They have such great ideas!! Ask your student what they are thinking about!
Thanks again for another great week! Below are pictures of the shout outs our class has been writing to each other. Big shout out to Breona and Aleacya, who wrote several for every single member of our class! It was great to see the smiles these brought to our class.
Have a great, restful weekend!
What an amazing start to the year! We have such an enthusiastic, funny, curious, and kind group! The first day always goes by so quickly. Today we talked a lot about what kind of community we want to build, what we wished people knew about us, and our hopes for the year. We also even found time to dust off the cobwebs, and restart our reading and writing routines! Ask a student about Sacred Writing Time or the new book they may have picked up at the library today! Thank you, students, for such an amazing day!
